FAQ
What is the difference between a Postpaid and Prepaid?
▣ Business model of a Postpaid (Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T) is to receive the service before all the costs are paid and is geared towards the people who want the best phones without putting up the money upfront. The Prepaid business model is to pay first before receiving the services and is geared towards the people who either already have a phone or don’t mind a phone that is higher value (lower cost). Often the phones that retail for up to $500 are given away for free when qualified.
▣ Cost wise, Prepaid services are typically cheaper.
▣ Performance varies. In AT&T case, the Postpaid customers get superior network service as their Prepaid services performances are throttles (kept artificially lower at some ceiling to provide superior service for their Postpaid customers). In T-Mobile case, the Postpaid services are prioritized only when the network is congested. In Verizon case, there is no difference in network availability between Postpaid and Prepaid.
▣ The Prepaid brand of Verizon is Total Wireless. For T-Mobile it is Metro by T-Mobile and for AT&T it is Cricket.
What is a Master Agent?
▣ Total Wireless, Metro by T-Mobile, and Cricket have several thousands of stores each. Each parent company (Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T) do not want to manage all the stores or the individual store owners directly and work through a middle management company that is called a Mast Agent in Verizon case.
▣ The role of the Master Agents differs greatly. All Master Agent handholds the dealers (store owners) through the building and opening, but once the stores are open, a typical Master Agent’s role is to manage the stores on-behalf of their parent company such as Verizon. On one extreme, a Master Agent becomes nearly “absent”. On the other extreme, a Master Agent is involved in daily operations to align the goals of the dealers (store owners) and the parent company (such as Verizon).
